George H. “Cork” Ramsey, 88, of Chicora, a well-known retired mail carrier, went to be with the Lord early Thursday morning, October 25, 2018 at the VNA Inpatient Hospice in Butler while surrounded by his family. George was born in East Brady on December 18, 1929. He was the son of the late Walter and Anna Dunmyre Ramsey.
He was raised by his grandparents, George and Maude Dunmyre. He graduated from Chicora High School in 1947 and attended the University of Pittsburgh majoring in Engineering. In his earlier years he was employed as a truck driver for Dunmyre Motor Express in Chicora.
He then enlisted in the U.S. Air Force and served from 1948 – 1952. He returned home to Chicora and continued his truck driving career until 1954 when he and his brother-in-law, Milford “Muss” Collier, purchased the Colonial Inn in Chicora. He operated the tavern with Muss and Betty for more than fifteen years.
He then was employed by the U.S. Postal Service as a rural mail carrier and worked from the Chicora office for more than 35 years. Following his retirement, Cork was employed as a part-time driver for BART for 15 years. Cork was preceded in death by his wife, Virginia “Gin” Collier Ramsey, whom he married at Mater Dolorosa Church in Chicora in 1950.
Mrs. Ramsey passed away on July 15, 2012. The Ramseys were the proud parents of five children who survive, Michelle Miller and her husband, Rick, of Chicora, George Ramsey and his wife, Gail, of Parker, Greg Ramsey and his wife, Cheryl, of Butler, Melinda Schultheis and her husband, Lou, of Cabot, and Natalie Terwilliger and her husband, Bill, of Chicora; twelve grandchildren, fifteen great grandchildren, and was looking forward soon to a sixteenth great grandchildren, as well as a number of half siblings, nieces, nephews, and cousins. In addition to his parents and wife, George was preceded in death by a sister, Fern Craig, a number of half siblings, and brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law.
Friends will be received the Hile Funeral Home of Chicora, 339 Chicora Fenelton Rd. , Chicora, from Noon – 3 and 6 – 9 p.m. Sunday. A funeral mass will be celebrated at 10:00 a.m. Monday from Mater Dolorosa Roman Catholic Church in Chicora with the Rev.
Matthew McClain, church pastor, officiating. Interment with military honors provided by the Chicora, East Brady, and Brady’s Bend American Legion Posts will be at Hemphill Cemetery, Chicora. Memorial contributions may be made to The Chicora Volunteer Fire Dept.
