He was born on December 10, 1934, in Englishtown, NJ, a son of the late Albert and Iris Griggs Young and married Diane M. Matyis on June 27, 1992, in Cranbury, NJ. Gerald worked as an auto mechanic for the majority of his life.

He worked in fleet maintenance for RCA, Princeton, NJ, for nineteen years and then at Princeton University, also in fleet maintenance, for thirteen years, retiring in 1999. When he wasn’t working, Gerald and Diane enjoyed going to NASCAR races in their RV.
