Gerald’s Obituary Gerald Joseph Burke, 86, of Leland, NC, died on March 6, 2019, at New Hanover Regional Medical Center surrounded by family and holding the hand of his beloved wife, Mary Ann. Gerald was born on May 4, 1932, in Halifax, Nova Scotia, and immigrated to the United States in 1958 but remained a proud Canadian for the remainder of his life. Gerald married Mary Ann, his “Queen,” in Hawaii in July, 1962.

They had four children. During his career as a bank executive, the family lived in several states before settling in Simsbury, CT in 1977. A smart, strong, proud and dignified man, always well-dressed, he was frequently seen cutting his lawn in dress shoes and slacks.

They were blessed with five cherished grandsons who all adored their “Pop Pop,” his fabulous stories and his spontaneous renditions of popular songs from the 30’s and 40’s. In 2016, the couple retired to Wilmington and Leland, NC, where Gerald was frequently spotted proudly wearing his Yankees baseball cap. Gerald is survived by his devoted wife of 56 years, Mary Ann and their children: Gina (David) Lammey of Simsbury, CT, Gerard Burke of California, Judy (Ralph) Lagana of West Hartford, CT and Robert (Christina) Burke of Leland, NC, as well as his five grandsons.

The oldest of nine children, Gerald is survived by seven of his younger siblings: Patsy (Doug) Rosebourough of Halifax, Donald Burke of Musquodoboit Harbor, Nova Scotia, Wayne Burke of Dartmouth, Nova Scotia , Edward Burke of Halifax, James Burke of Halifax, Judy (Peter) Dufour of Lasalle, Ontario, David (Brenda) Burke of Mt. Uniacke, Nova Scotia, and many nieces and nephews. He is predeceased by his brother, Robert Burke of Vancouver, British Columbia, and his parents, Gerard and M. Agnes Burke of Halifax.

He was also predeceased by his lifelong best friend since kindergarten, Donald “Youngie” Young, of Halifax and his treasured brother-in-law, Brig. Gen. Peter E. Genovese Jr. of Brick, New Jersey.

A funeral is scheduled for 10:00 AM Monday, March 11, 2019, at St. Mark Church in Wilmington, NC and a private family burial will be held in Nova Scotia, Canada this summer. Aloha Nui Loa.
