Geronima’s Obituary Gery, as she was affectionately known, was born on September 3, 1932 in Naguabo, Puerto Rico, the second daughter of her parents, Victoria Santana and Feliciano Diaz. At the age of 17 she came to live with her half sister, Ramonita, in New York City. She came in search of a better life and fulfillment of a personal mission of helping her family in Puerto Rico.

She later moved to Perth Amboy, New Jersey where she eventually met the love of her life, Leonardo “Nayo” Ramos. They lived first in Woodbridge, and, soon after, bought a house on Washington Street in Perth Amboy where their four children, Nelsie, Leonard, Nelly and Nelson were born. Gery and her husband were very instrumental in helping re-settle many families from Puerto Rico as they transitioned into their new life in New Jersey.

Additionally, Gery was very involved in her church, La Asuncion, from 1953 to 1970, as a Cursillista, whose mission it was to share with the community the essence of Christianity and Christian values. In addition to being a dedicated mother to her family, Gery also participated in the labor force having worked seventeen years at a shirt factory in Park Avenue, Perth Amboy. Gery is best remembered by friends and family as a beautiful lady with a great sense of style.

She was a joyful and loving mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and friend to all who had the privilege to know her. Her zest for life, love of music and dance and wonderful hospitality were her signature trademarks we all came to love and will forever miss. Gery was predeceased by her husband, Leonardo “Nayo” Ramos in 1982.

Surviving are children, Nelsie Martinez and her husband Edwin, Leonardo Ramos, Jr. and his wife Iris, Nelly Ramos and Nelson Ramos and his wife Ivette. Also surviving are her grandchildren, Jaime, Jason, Daniel, Christian, Ryan, Cassandra and Victoria; great grandchildren, Laila, Jasmin, Alexa, Olivia, Julissa, Christian, Jr. and Lucas along with sisters, nieces and nephews living in Puerto Rico. A prayer service will begin at 10am on Thursday, January 31, 2019 at CHUBENKO FUNERAL HOME, 625 Port Reading Avenue, Port Reading followed by interment at St. James Cemetery in Woodbridge.
