Gordon M. “Mike” Johnson, 82, passed away peacefully on October 27, 2018. A visitation will be held from 1-2 PM, service 2 PM, on Friday, November 2, at Johnson County Funeral Chapel, 11200 Metcalf Ave, Overland Park, KS 66210. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Wayside Waifs, 3901 Martha Truman Rd, Kansas City, MO 64137.

Mike, the youngest of eight children of Clay and Violet Johnson, was born December 23, 1935 on a farm near Crofton, Nebraska. He graduated from Indianola High School, Indianola, Iowa and from William Jewell College, Liberty, Missouri. At William Jewell he was a member of Phi Gamma Delta Fraternity.

Mike married Carole J. Dameron in 1957. A son, Joseph C. Johnson, was born to this marriage, which ended in divorce. After college he enlisted in the US Army Reserves, serving 6 years with the 325th General Hospital, KC, MO.

He began his banking career in 1959 working for Columbia National Bank, KC, MO and retired from Guaranty Bank and Trust, KC, KS in 2000. At the time of his retirement, he was Vice Chairman. Mike developed many lasting relationships during those 41 years.

Helping a customer achieve his or her dreams was a very satisfying reward. He was active with several civic and community organizations. He had a specific interest in Quail Unlimited, Inc. and Ducks Unlimited, Inc., helping them raise money for wildlife habitat improvements.

His favorite past time was big game hunting, shooting accurate rifles and following his bird dogs in pursuit of quail and pheasants. Mike is survived by his wife, Shirley Ann. They had a grand partnership building their life together.

There was always a project, travels, gardening, good books, and family to fill their days with fulfillment. He is also survived by his son, Joseph C. Johnson and his wife Yvonne; step-sons, John Clauson and Steve Clauson; two grandchildren; nine step-grandchildren; fourteen step-great grandchildren; and sister, Joyce Weber of Eastport, MA.
