Mass of Christian Burial for Greg A. Weidner, 54, Madison, will be 10:00 a.m., Wednesday, May 9, 2018 at St. Francis Catholic Church in Humphrey. Reverend Patrick McLaughlin will be the celebrant. Burial will be in the parish cemetery in Humphrey.
Visitation will be 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. Tuesday with a 7:00 p.m. Vigil Service at the church. Home for Funerals is in charge of arrangements. He passed away Friday, May 4, 2018 near Battle Creek, Nebraska due to a farming accident.
Greg was born December 20, 1963, to his parents James and Karen (Oberhauser) Weidner in Newman Grove, Nebraska. He graduated from Humphrey High School in 1982. Following graduation, he obtained his bachelor’s degree from Kearney State College in 1986 in Business Administration/Accounting.
On May 29, 1993, Greg married Karen Gillen at St. Francis Catholic Church in Humphrey. He had a passion for farming and received the Madison Area Chamber of Commerce Farm Family of the Year in 2013. He enjoyed family gatherings, reunions, and the tug of war challenges.
Greg served at the state level as Elkhorn’s State Director to the Nebraska Rural Electric Association (NREA) and was currently the NREA Vice President/Secretary and past Treasurer. Greg was a member of the LEAD 24 program and a member of the Nebraska LEAD Alumni Association. He was a practicing CPA, a member of the Nebraska Society of Certified Public Accountants and the Knights of Columbus.
Greg also was an active and dedicated public servant. He served on the Elkhorn Rural Public Power District Board of Directors since 2007. He was President of the Board since January of 2017.
He was dedicated to learning as much as he could and attended many conferences and educational opportunities to increase his knowledge and experience of the electric utility industry in order to better serve the customers and staff of Elkhorn. In pursuit of that education, he completed National Rural Electric Cooperative Association (NRECA) leadership training which included Credentialed Cooperative Director, 2008; NRECA Board Leadership Certificate, 2011; and Director Gold Certificate 2016. All these programs required commitment and determination to complete, as well as a significant amount of personal time, which exemplified the type of person Greg strived to be.
He is survived by his wife Karen, mother Karen of Humphrey, brother Dan (Cathy) Weidner of Humphrey, sisters Lori (Glenn) Beller of Lindsay, Mary Kay (Tim) Pribyl of Milligan, and Sue (Russ) Zaiser of Norfolk, mother-in-law Margaret Sughroue of Omaha, sisters-in-law Pam (Rich) Eckstein of Lindwood, Gail (Russ) Craig, Nancy (Rich) Case, both of Omaha, and Mary (Jeff) Pavel of Bellevue, and numerous nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles and cousins. Greg was preceded in death by his father and grandparents. Memorials may be addressed to the donor’s choice.
