Obituary for Gunnel Zaar Gunnel Zaar, age 85, passed away peacefully on Sunday, September 30, 2018 at Sparrow Hospital in Lansing, Michigan after a short illness. Gunnel was born in Fagersta, Sweden to Lilly and Bernhard Granstrom on February 6, 1933. She was the youngest of nine brothers and sisters, including her twin brother, Gunnar.

She married Ralf Zaar on July 9, 1955. In 1957 she made the brave decision to immigrate with her husband and baby daughter to the United States. They initially moved to Canada while awaiting sponsorship, living in Vancouver B.C. and then Toronto.

From there, they moved to Syracuse, New York, and finally settled in Ann Arbor, Michigan in 1963. Gunnel was an active member of Ann Arbor Free Methodist Church for over 50 years. After her divorce in 1980 she decided to go back to school and earned her LPN at Washtenaw Community College.

She worked for several University of Michigan medical offices and retired in 1996. Gunnel was smart, warm, compassionate, and funny. She was loved by many and will be missed by all who knew her.

Gunnel is survived by her four children: Marie (Andy) Brown of Burnsville, MN, Debbie (Ron) Leadbitter of Dimondale, MI, Inger (Mark) Meyer of East Lansing, MI, and Erik (Lisa) Zaar of Northville, MI; her seven grandchildren: David (Alexandra) Brown, Alex Brown, Carrie (Dan) Reinecke, Shane (Heather) Moon, Kyle Leadbitter, Annika Zaar, and Greta Zaar; her four great-grandchildren: Scot, Adriana, Cooper, and Gunnar; her twin brother Gunnar, and many nieces and nephews in Sweden. On Thursday, October 4, 2018, Patrick Kelsey, officiated a private service for the family and Gunnel’s close friends at Nie Family Funeral Home in Ann Arbor. She was laid to rest at Washtenong Memorial Park in Ann Arbor.
