H.J. (Jack) Bergman May 3, 1926 – October 26, 2018 H. J. (Jack) Bergman, of College Place, died Oct. 26, 2018, in Walla Walla. He was 92.

Jack was born to Esther and Reuben Bergman on May 3, 1926, in Akiak, AK. Jack and his younger brother, Jim, were raised in Alaska and at the family wheat ranch in Endicott, WA. Jack graduated from Yakima Valley Academy in 1944, and from Walla Walla College (now Walla Walla University) in 1948 with a degree in history.

In 1946 he married Jean Culton;… Read More » they later divorced. Jack married Evelyn Templeman Reiswig in 1963. He graduated from Puget Sound University with a master’s degree in history, and from Washington State University with a Ph.D. in history.

He taught at Oregon College of Education (now Western Oregon University) in Monmouth, OR, and later became the Dean of Arts and Sciences there. In 1985, he became the president of Walla Walla College, serving in that capacity until 1990; he retired in 1991. He served for a number of years after his retirement as the religious liberty representative for the Seventh-day Adventist church in the Washington State Legislature.

He enjoyed photography, geology, genealogical research, travel, gardening, and reading, and was involved in many different capacities in the SDA church, both locally and on the conference and union levels. Jack was predeceased by his parents and brother. He is survived by his wife, Evelyn, at home; son, Stephen (Portland, OR); daughter, Kathy (Fred) Fost (Sisters, OR); daughter, Marsha (Larry) Large (Wilsonville, OR): daughter, Kristin (Scott) Fry (Milton-Freewater); son, Robert (College Place); five grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

Memorial services will be held November 17, 2018, at 4 p.m., at the University Church, College Place, WA. A Memorial Service will be November 17, 2018 at 4pm at the University Seventh-day Adventist Church, College Place, WA 99324.
