Harold Duane Childs May 07, 1930 – February 19, 2019 Share this obituary Send Flowers Sign Guestbook Harold ‘Duane’ Childs, 88, died February 19, 2019, at Hutchinson Regional Medical Center. He was born May 7, 1930, in Plevna, to William Denver ‘W.D.’ and Gladys Lucille (Smith) Childs. Duane graduated from Plevna High School in 1948.

After graduating high school, he served in the Army National Guard from 1948-1957, working as a Sergeant First Class Assistant Battalion, Battery Supply Sergeant, and in the 161st Service Battery Field Artillery. Duane then worked as the manager for Farmers Co-Op Union Feed Store, Sterling. He enjoyed camping, fishing, and his household pets.

Duane also volunteered as a Webelos leader and Cubmaster for the Sterling Boy Scouts. He was a member of First Church of the Nazarene, Hutchinson. On December 20, 1952, he married Betty Carol Jennings in Sylvia.

They shared almost 65 years of marriage before her death on December 7, 2017. Duane is survived by: son, Kevin and wife Sharon of Hutchinson; daughter, Rhonda Carlson and husband Richard of Wichita; 11 grandchildren; and 17 great-grandchildren, with another great-granddaughter scheduled to arrive in May. He was preceded in death by: his parents; wife, Betty (Jennings) Childs; son, Randall Kent Childs; brothers, Chalmers, Robert ‘Bob’, Denver, and Donald Childs; and sisters, Thelma Childs and Rosalie Childs.

Funeral service will be 1:30 p.m. Monday, February 25, 2019, at First Church of the Nazarene, Hutchinson, with Pastor Kent Pedersen officiating. Burial will follow in Memorial Park Cemetery, Hutchinson. Friends may call from 1:00 to 8:00 p.m. Sunday, with the family present from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. at Elliott Mortuary.

Memorials may be made to First Church of the Nazarene, Hutchinson, or Friends of Animals of Rice County, in care of Elliott Mortuary, 1219 N. Main, Hutchinson, KS 67501.
