Harry Clyde “Bud” Gruber Jr., age 89, of Woodsboro, died peacefully Wednesday, October 10, 2018, at his home. He was born on December 30, 1928 in the same home where he has lived for 85 years. He was the son of the late Harry C. Gruber Sr. and Leah Fox Gruber.

He was the husband of Doris Long Gruber, his wife of 67 years. Bud attended New Midway and Woodsboro schools and worked as a dairy farmer from a young age. He also worked for a brief time and was formerly on the board of directors with Southern States. He was a member of the New Midway fire company. He was a self-taught mechanic, working on cars; loved Allis-Chalmers tractors, tinkering with old equipment and his dogs and cats.

In earlier years he and his family raised over 60 raccoons. Surviving, in addition to his wife, are children and spouses, Harriet L. and Randy Hicks, David C. and Betty Gruber, Timmy R. and Robin Gruber, Shawn W. and Renee Gruber and Tammy N. Sanderlin and Daniel Jones, all of Woodsboro; 12 grandchildren; 25 great-grandchildren; 1 great-great-granddaughter; and a brother, Carroll Gruber of Woodsboro; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by sisters, Mary Long and Elsie Wilt.

The family will receive friends at Hartzler Funeral Home, 404 S. Main St., Woodsboro, Sunday, Oct 14 from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. A funeral service will be held at the funeral home at 11 a.m. on Monday, Oct. 15. Mr. Gene Cregger will officiate.

Interment will follow in Utica Cemetery, after which there will be a gathering at the New Midway fire hall for lunch at 1:00. Memorial contributions may be made to the Frederick County Humane Society, 550 Highland St., Suite 200, Frederick, MD 21701.
