Hazel’s Obituary Hazel Annette Howell Cox, 92, of Waycross went home to be with her Lord and Savior surrounded by her loving family Sunday evening (March 10, 2019) at Baptist Village in Waycross after a brief illness. She was born in Waycross to the late Estelle Howell and Lovie Strickland Cox. During World War II she worked in the Shipyards in Brunswick on Liberty Ships as a Welder.

These ships would carry supplies to soldiers in Germany. After she met her husband she was a homemaker. Mrs. Cox preached for over 20 years on Sunday afternoons on WACL.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Charlie Anderson Cox; her father, Estelle Howell; and her mother and step-father, Lovie Strickland and Henry Cox; one daughter, Frieda Sue Cox Smith; one sister, Doris Carter; three brothers, N.E. Howell, Arnold Howell, and Edward Cox. Survivors include one son, Ricky Cox and his wife Katie of Waycross; one son-in-law, Richard Smith and his wife Janice of Waycross; one brother, Ferrell Cox (wife Beatrice) of Waycross; seven grandchildren, Beth Gardner of Waycross, Michael Smith (wife Dennille) of Columbus, GA, Mark Smith (wife Stephanie) of Blackshear, Les Smith, Chris Douglas (wife Tammy) of Waycross, Kasey Strickland (husband Stanley) of Blackshear, Kirk Douglas (wife Andrea) of Oro Valley, AZ; fourteen great-grandchildren, 3 great-great-grandchildren; two special nieces, Carolyn Parker of Waycross, and Kathy Inman of Blackshear; a special friend, Rev. Richard Jeffers of Waycross; several nieces, nephews and other relatives.

A funeral service will be held Thursday afternoon at 2 pm at the Miles-Odum Funeral Home Chapel. Burial will follow in Swamp Road Baptist Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends Thursday beginning at 12 pm at the funeral home.
