Heinz W. Ehlers, 90, of Rock Island, died Wednesday, October 10, 2018 at Heartland Health Care Center, Moline. Cremation rites were accorded. A memorial service will be 11 a.m. Tuesday at St. John’s Lutheran Church, Rock Island.

The family will greet friends following the service. Memorials may be made in care of St. John’s Lutheran Church, Rock Island. Heinz was born in Nienburg Weser, Germany on May 14, 1928, a son of Heinrich and Anna Ehlers.

He married Ingrid Hoppe on September 21, 1963 in Kenora, Ontario, Canada. Heinz moved to Kenora, Ontario when he was 20 years old where he worked as a lumberjack. During his time there, he met and befriended two Augustana College professors who found him a job in Rock Island at the college.

For the next 30 years, Heinz, worked as a supervisor in charge of the heating and air conditioning, retiring in 1992. Heinz was a longtime member of St. John’s Lutheran Church, Rock Island. Those left to cherish his memory include his wife, Ingrid Ehlers, Rock Island; daughter, Heike (Paul Fessler) Ehlers, Rock Island; grandson, Griffin Evans; and step-grandchildren, Grant and Galena Fessler.

He was preceded in death by his parents.
