Donald R. Acuff, 85, formerly of Rock Island, passed away Thursday October 4, 2018 at Sunset Health Care and Rehabilitation Center, Canton. Graveside services will be 1:30 p.m. Tuesday at Memorial Park Cemetery, Rock Island. No visitation is planned.

Arrangements are entrusted to Wheelan-Pressly Funeral Home, Rock Island. Memorials may be made to St. Mary’s Catholic Church or Rock Island Christian Care. Donald was born January 23, 1933 in Davenport, Iowa, a son of Lon R. and Charlotte M. Copp Acuff.

Don graduated from St. Mary’s Catholic School, Rock Island High School, and the University of Iowa. He was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Rock Island. After college graduation Don enlisted in the United States Army, where he served as a Russian Interpreter in Hokkaido, Japan.

Following an honorable discharge from the Army, Don taught in the Rock Island school district. Don was single and never married. He enjoyed playing chess, reading and writing poetry and traveling.

Survivors include his sister, Suzanne Acuff Manhard; cousins, Tom and Barbara Acuff; nieces, Julie Manhard and Laura Manhard Pointer; great niece and great nephew, Cynthia and Steve Pointer. Don was preceded in death by parents; grandparents, William and Mary Copp and Mayme Acuff; brother, Jim Acuff; aunt, Lucia Acuff Casey; Uncles, Fred and Earl Acuff; and cousin, Dr. Gene Acuff.
