Johnson, age 89, Rosholt, SD, passed away Sunday, May 6, 2018, in the Browns Valley Health Center, Browns Valley, MN. Funeral services will be Thursday, May 10, at 11:00 a.m. at Walla Lutheran Church in rural New Effington, SD, officiated by Rev. Suzanne Benidt.

Music will be provided by organist Robin Dare. Burial will be in the Walla Cemetery, rural New Effington. Honorary pallbearers will be the American Legion Auxiliary.

Active pallbearers will be Tom Wagner, Dale Wagner, Keith Voss, Kyle Voss, Elroy Klein, and Neil Jacobson. Visitation will be Wednesday from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. at the Eggers Funeral Home in Rosholt and will continue Thursday one hour prior to the service at the church. Helen Jean Johnson was born August 27, 1928, in Victor Township, north of Victor, SD.

She was the third daughter of Gust and Olga (Hull) Johnson. Helen grew up on the family farm and attended Victor #3 and Rosholt High School, graduating in 1946. She attended Interstate Business College in Fargo and then worked at Allis Chalmers for seven years.

She then moved to Minneapolis, went to IBM School, and was employed at the Postal Data Center for 31 years. In 1987, she retired and returned to Rosholt. Helen entered the Rosholt Nursing Home in June of 2014 and in November 2016, made her home in the Browns Valley Health Center.

Traveling was a favorite pastime for Helen throughout the years. She had been to various places in the U.S, Canada, and Mexico, and to Europe three times. She visited relatives in Sweden twice and attended three World Fairs in Seattle, Montreal and Spokane.

In 2014, Helen tried her hand at writing by sending two short stories to the “Hometown Memories,” which publishes Tales from the Good Old Days in Eastern and Northeastern South Dakota. Helen was a member of Walla Lutheran Church where she served as the organist and Walla Cemetery secretary/treasurer for many years and held various offices in the Ladies Aid. She was a life-long member of the American Legion Auxiliary and enjoyed selling poppies every year.

Helen was also active in the Rosholt Senior Citizens and the Nursing Home Auxiliary, helping with Bingo and Bible study. Survivors include a sister, Karen (LeRoy) Edlund of Cyrus, MN; and several nieces and nephews. Helen was preceded in death by her parents; sisters, Mavis Wagner and Elaine Tazelaar; and nephew, Mike Wagner.
