Obituary of Herbert Kain Dr. Herbert Kent Kain died on November 19, 2018 at the age of 91 in Aptos, California after a happy and successful life. Herbert was born in Birmingham, Alabama on July 12, 1927. He moved with his family to Pittsburg, California in 1941.

Upon graduation from UC Berkeley, he was drafted into the Army and proudly served in the Medical Corps during the Korean War. After his discharge from the service, he entered Johns Hopkins School of Medicine in Baltimore graduating in 1958. He completed his studies in medicine back in California with a residency at Stanford University followed by a Fellowship at UCSF.

In 1960 after a whirlwind romance, he married the love of his life, Margaret. They moved their young family to Los Gatos in 1963 where he joined a private medical practice, specializing in Internal Medicine and Cardiology. For 37 years, it was his great honor to take care of his patients and devote his professional life to the Los Gatos Medical Community, enjoying the camaraderie of exceptional doctors and nurses whom he counted among his friends.

One of his proudest achievements was being a part of the creation of The Valley Foundation. He remained an active Board member well into his retirement. Herb is survived by his wife of 58 years, Margaret Ann (Buehler) Kain, and children Tricia Hagey (Greg), Peter Kain (Shari) and Tim Kain (Lucy).

His grandchildren, Mackenzie, Candace, Bobby, Nick, Jessica, Cameron and Jeremy, will miss their attentive and caring Grandad. Many nieces and nephews will also miss sharing in his joy of life. He was preceded in death by his parents: Edmund and Carrie Kain, stepmother Lovilla Kain and his 5 brothers and sisters: Eddie Kain (Mary Lou), John Kain (Barbara), Betty Ellert (Joe), Katherine Sisler (Bob) and Molly Kain.

Herbert will be remembered for his many passions and teachable moments. He always had something he was studying from astronomy and wildflowers to opera librettos. He shared his interests and knowledge with patience and love.

For the last 20 years, he and Margaret enjoyed a blessed and beautiful retirement in La Selva Beach where they hosted friends and family at their townhome overlooking the Pacific Ocean. Herbert continued to serve his community as a volunteer in the Senior Computer Center of Santa Cruz and as a Eucharistic Minister for his parish. We would like to thank the outstanding nurses, doctors and staff at Dominican Hospital for their compassionate and expert care, Hospice of Santa Cruz County and the caregivers who helped to make his last days dignified and comfortable.
