Obituary for Hilde Chappell Hildegard K. Furst Chappell, 91, of Martinsville, VA, formerly of Modling, Austria, died peacefully on October 24, 2018, at Mountain Valley Hospice in Yadkinville, NC. Born September 11, 1927, she is predeceased by her parents, Maria Krist and Josef Furst, her brother, Ernst Furst, and her husband, John Douglas Chappell. Hilde was a homemaker and a bookkeeper for her husband, Doug, in the ownership and operation of Snows Sandwich Shop.

She enjoyed playing in the bell choir at First Presbyterian Church. Hilde had a passion for life and for lively intellectual conversations. Those who knew her were touched by her wit and her charm.

She was a gracious host and always made her guests feel welcome and appreciated. She is survived by three children: Paul Carey Chappell, of Martinsville, VA; Linda Chappell McCorkindale, of Winston-Salem, NC; and Angela Chappell Wampler, of Yadkinville, NC; and by seven grandchildren, and one great-grandchild. A memorial service will be held at the First Presbyterian Church of Martinsville, VA Thursday, November 1, 2018 at 3:00 pm with Rev.

Mark Hinchcliff officiating. The family will receive friends at the church immediately following the service. In lieu of flowers, please consider donations to: the Mountain Valley Hospice and Palliative Care at SECU Hospice Care Center, 243 North Lee Ave, Yadkinville, NC 27055, the First Presbyterian Church, 1901 Patrick Henry Ave, Martinsville, VA 24112 or to the charity of the donor’s choice.
