Hugh M Peters, 95, died on the evening of Friday, October 19, 2018 at Bickford Cottage, Champaign. There will be a funeral service on Tuesday, October 23 at 9:00 am at Owens Funeral Home, 101 N. Elm St., Champaign with Pastor Judd Travis officiating. The burial will be at Sumner Cemetery in Sumner, IL at 1:00 pm.

Hugh was born August 28, 1923 in Sumner. He was the son of Allie L. and Ollie M. Peters. Three sisters; Garnet, Evelyn and Jane preceded him in death, as well as a brother, Dr. L.A.Peters and a nephew, Donald Creek.

He graduated from high school in 1941. His University of IL education was interrupted by World War II and he enlisted in the Army on Dec. 10, 1942.

The date of separation was Feb. 14, 1946. He returned to the University of IL and achieved his BA degree in Social Studies in 1947 and MA degree in 1951.

In 1962, he received his MA degree in Political Science from Wayne State University in Detroit, MI. His first work assignment was as a teacher in the Maywood Illinois school district for a period of 5 years. He retired from Ferndale Michigan school district in September 1978.

His work assignments were teacher, Director of Reading for the school district, Director of Federal Programs and last years as Principal of George Washington Elementary School. While he was Principal, he also directed the Head Start Program for the entire school district. In 1971 the Kiwanis Club of Pleasant Ridge, MI named him Kiwanian of the Year.

He was President of that club from 1972-1973. Surviving relatives include 3 nephews: Walter Peters, Ronald Peters and a great nephew, Gregory Creek, their families and his good friends.
