Obituary for Irene Ramirez (Romero) Irene Ramirez (Romero) was born June 30, 1927 in Loveland Colorado, to Jacobo and Cleotilde Romero. She and her 12 brothers and sisters lived between Northern Colorado and Northern New Mexico. When Irene was only 12, Cleotilde Romero became ill and passed on, leaving Irene with the responsibility of raising her younger brothers and sisters.
She was devoted to her father, Jacobo and was by his side after her mother passed doing whatever needed to be done. Despite leaving school much too early to become a surrogate mother; and the challenges of living in poverty in the 1940s, she prevailed. Her handwriting, accounting, and artistic skills shined though.
Anyone who’s seen her penmanship, worn her handmade clothes, or tasted her empanadas, can surely attest. Afterwards, the family located to Northern Colorado and worked in the sugar-beet fields. They were a very patriotic family, and served their country in any way possible.
It was there, while selling 5 cent coca-colas at a church-sponsored dance at the State Armory in Greeley, where she met a young man in a well-pressed army uniform who would keep returning for more soda just to see this beautiful woman. Little did she know, this boy would be her dance partner for the next 50 years. They were married in 1950, and after living in Los Angeles, and Albuquerque, they finally moved to Denver where they raised their four children: Theresa, Victor, Yvonne and Michael.
While Joe worked as a clerk for the U.S. Geological Survey, Irene raised their children as they attended school and into college where she often worked cleaning houses to support them. Irene was a master at the sewing machine, in the kitchen, and in the garden where she and her husband Joe would spend the warm seasons, birdwatching and enjoying their 13 grandchildren picking flowers and playing in the yard. Irene loved Mexican music.
Her Sunday mornings were spent drinking her strong coffee, listening to Pedro Infante, Jorge Negrete, Mariachi Vargas and Linda Rondstadt on Spanish language radio. If it was Sunday, it was Bronco Sunday for Irene and Joe. On April 24, 2018 she passed into to the kingdom of heaven peacefully, surrounded by her family.
She was preceded in death by her parents, all of her bothers and sisters, and by her husband Joe; and, on his birthdate, May 2, 2018, will be laid to rest with him. Irene’s faith, devotion and love of family made her strong and determined to live every day to the fullest. She is survived by her four children, 13 grandchildren and 20 great-grandchildren.
May she rest in eternal peace and love. To send flowers or a memorial gift to the family of Irene Ramirez (Romero) please visit our Sympathy Store. Upcoming Events Rosary/Rosario 2018 MAY 1.
