Obituary for Jack Ray Avery Jack Ray Avery, 80, of Johnston City, passed away at 12:24 a.m., Saturday, March 23, 2019 at his residence with his loving family by his side. Jack was born August 19, 1938 in Johnston City to George Henry and Gladys Marie (Gunter) Avery. He married his high school sweetheart Opal (Kee) Avery on November 16, 1957.

Together they shared 61 years of marriage. Jack was retired, having been a carpenter for many years. He enjoyed fishing at Reel Foot Lake before his health began to fail.

He was a proud supporter of the Johnston City High School Athletics Program and enjoyed attending games whenever he could. Jack was a member of Carpenters Local #638. He was also a member of the Johnston City Lions Club.

He was a lifetime member of Lake Creek Baptist Church. He was a 1957 graduate of Johnston City High School. Jack was also the sound man for his family’s band, the Por-Kees.

Survivors include his wife, Opal Avery of Johnston City; two brothers, Donald (Dorothy) Avery of Marion and Gerald and Shirley Avery of West Frankfort; sister, Jane Oxford of Marion; three sisters-in-law, Barbara (Tony) Vatovec of Johnston City, Arnetta (Gene) Whitlock of Godfrey and Judy Kee of Johnston City; two brothers-in-law, Vernon (Maureen) Kee of Johnston City and Jerry (Gayle) Kee of Marion. He is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews. Jack was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers-in-law, George Kee and Harry Oxford and a sister-in-law, Vera Bishop.

Services will be 12:00 p.m., Wednesday, March 27, 2019 in Pyle Funeral Home with Rev. Bob Nolen officiating. Inurnment will follow in Rose Hill Cemetery in Marion.

Visitation will be 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. on Wednesday at the funeral home. Pyle Funeral Home in Johnston City is entrusted with the arrangements. Memorial contributions may be made to the Johnston City Lions Club Scholarship Fund.
