Jack’s Obituary Jack Ronald Brownlee, born on August 10, 1936 in the back apartment of a small grocery store at 513 North Cleveland run by his parents Cecil Maynard Brownlee and Norma Delilah Lathrop Brownlee. Raised in Cushing attended Highland, Wilson and Harding Grade Schools and Cushing Junior High and Cushing High School, graduating with the Class of 1954. He attended Oklahoma A&M College and Draughons School of Business.
He married Joan Carrolyn Love on June 2, 1957. To them three sons were born, Brent Kevin, Todd Anthony, and Chad Alan. He began his career with the Mays Oil Co. of Cushing and then worked for the Kerr-McGee corporation until December of 1962.
At that time he went in partnership with his Father at Brownlee Grocery and Market on Fifth St. in Cushing. During this time, he and Carolyn were blessed with three sons. In 1972, he became owner of the store when his Father retired although his Father and Mother continued to help when needed.
In 1974, Jack built the store on the corner of Ninth and Little St. It was then known as the Little 9 Food Store. Jack built the Auto Repair Garage at 1010 South Little St. in 1979 and leased it until 2000. In 1980, he built the Little 9 Clean and Shine Carwash next to the garage.
Jack operated both grocery stores until 1994 when he closed the full service store on 5th St. He continued to operate the Little 9 store and carwash until 1997 when he retired. Jack was a faithful member of the First Christian Church becoming a member in 1948 when he was baptized at the age of 12 years. Jack served his church as Deacon and served on many committees within the church.
He later became a member of the Cushing Christian Church. During his business career he served on many committees and boards within the community. Jack served on the very first Youth Center board as a chairman twice.
Served on the Steering Committee for the formation of Senior Citizens Center. Served on the Salvation Army Board. Served of the Payne County Industrial Development Committee.
Served on the board of the Chamber of Commerce. Served on the Cushing Regional Airport Advisory Board. Served on several Advisory Boards of Central Vo-Tech.
Cub Master, Harmony School, Asst. Scout Leader, First Christian Church, Cushing Christian Church, Member of Cushing Lions Club, Chairman of The Junior Olympics 14 years. Jack was very dedicated to his family and always said that his main goal in life was to give his children a college education in what ever field they chose.
Those that knew Jack knew that if you were a friend, he would never forsake you and would always stand up for you. He was very proud of that. They also knew that he was very hard headed and that if he believed that something was either right or wrong, you probably were not going to change his mind.
His principle was simple, Just get up everyday and try to be the best person you can be, knowing full well that before the day was over, someone would probably come along and try to mess it up for you. Strength comes from not letting them. Jack served 6 years in the United State Army (Active and Active Reserve).
He was Honorably Discharged in July of 1964 at the rank of SFC. (Sergeant First Class) While in high school in Cushing, Jack was active in most sports, but enjoyed playing basketball more than others, continuing even into his 40’s through the youth center adult programs. He was also captain of his high school track team competing in the 440 yard dash and the Mile Relay team.
After retirement, Jack maintained a hangar and office at Cushing Regional Airport, where he enjoyed his flying, woodworking, welding, playing golf and operated the Jack Brownlee Co. where he enjoyed playing in the stock market. Jack loved life, his wife Carrolyn, his boys and grandkids. He loved his dog Lucky and his Cats.
He enjoyed walking at the airport with Lucky and just thinking about how glad he was to love animals. He often remarked how much fun he had with his dog and cats. He said that everyone and everything that God had created was a part of his life.
He said that his life had been a party where everyone was invited. Jack is survived by his loving wife Carrolyn of the home, sons Brent Brownlee and wife Angela of Tulsa, Todd Brownlee of Dallas, Chad Brownlee of Owasso, grandchildren Taylor Brownlee, Kaylan Brownlee, Tyler Brownlee, Cami Brownlee. He was preceded in death by his parents.
Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m., Saturday, February 9, 2019 at the Cushing Christian Church, Cushing, OK. Interment will follow at Big Creek Church Cemetery, Cushing, OK. Visitation will be held on Friday, February 8, 2019 at Palmer Marler Funeral Home from 11:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. with family greeting friends from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Memorials may be made in Jack’s name to the Cushing Christian Church, Building Fund, 302 S. Linwood Ave.
