Obituary for Jack Ryan, MD Ryan, Jack M.D. age 93, passed away peacefully on Friday, September 28, 2018. He was born August 26, 1925 in Benton Harbor to the late Leonard and Beulah Ryan. He was predeceased by his wife Lois of over 60 years.
Together, they raised 5 children, Michele (Jeff) Phillips, Kevin (Kristin) Ryan, Tim (Felicia) Ryan, Sarah (John) Wysocki and Dr. Dan (Shannon) Ryan. Proud grandfather to Katherine, Joe, Scott, Jake, Delaney, Carly, Bryan, Michael, Conor, Gillian, Emmie and Aidan. Great-grandfather of June and Archer.
He was predeceased by his brothers Tom and Dr. Jim Ryan. After serving his country in the Navy during World War II, he received his education from Western Michigan University (where he was student body president, editor in chief of the Western Herald and captain of the debate team), Emory University Graduate School, University of Michigan Law School and the Wayne State University School of Medicine (where he received the Theodore McGraw Award as outstanding member of his class). Dr. Ryan had a successful family medicine practice for over 20 years and was Chief of Staff at South Macomb Hospital.
He transitioned into hospital administration and ultimately became President and CEO of Detroit – Macomb Hospital Corporation, from which he retired in 1996. His many professional honors include the Distinguished Key, the highest award bestowed by the Michigan Hospital Association, the Homer Strong Award from Wayne State University, the Tree of Life Award from the Jewish National Fund, the Distinguished Alumnus Award from Western Michigan University, from Wayne State University School of Medicine and Wayne State University. He was a Distinguished Fellow and board member of the American College of Physician Executives, President of the Detroit Academy of Medicine, and a clinical associate professor at the Wayne State University School of Medicine.
Early in his life, his passions included fast-pitch softball and amateur boxing. Later, his pursuits turned to tennis and golf. He was an avid reader with a special interest in history, most notably the Civil War.
He greatly enjoyed caring for the family home, with its beautiful gardens and koi filled pond, where he was able to live independently until his death. Private family services will be held at a later date.
