James Alan Richards, 62, passed away peacefully surrounded by his loving family on Wednesday, November 7, 2018, in Westbrook. He was born in Westbrook on July 1, 1956, the son of William J and Gertrude Louise (Andrews) Richards. James graduated from Westbrook High School in 1975; in 1988 he married the love of his life Elizabeth J. McDonough.

James was a dedicated public servant starting out with the City of Westbrook working in the Westbrook Rescue Unit. He then spent 35 years working for the Portland Police Department as a dispatcher. This was a career that was truly a passion for James.

He was always able to be a comforting voice to anyone who may be calling during hard times and also a calming voice to the police officers on patrol. James’ interest first and foremost was to be with his family and friends. He also enjoyed relaxing by the lake and during the winter he loved to snow plow.

He liked watching and attending sporting events and was intrigued by aviation as he enjoyed watching planes take off and land at the Jetport. Previously deceased: Mother-Gertrude (Louise) Richards, Father-William J. Richards Survived by: Wife of 30 years- Elizabeth J. Richards, son-James A. Richards II, daughter-Courtney N. Richards, brother/sister-in-law – Ralph & Annette Richards, brother-Robert Richards, sister-Sharon Curit (All of Westbrook), brother & sister-in-law – William & Carol Richards of Gray, brother & sister-in-law – Bruce & Tina Richards of New Gloucester, sister-Margaret Hood of Portland, sister-Debra DiBiase of Lebanon, and many many nieces, nephews, cousins, etc. The family would like to thank the nurses and staff at Casco Bay Dialysis who provided James with wonderful care and support.

In Lieu of flowers, if family or friends desire, a memorial contribution can be made in James’ name to the National Kidney Foundation. National Kidney Foundation Finance Department 30 East 33rd St. New York, NY 10016 Visiting Hours will be held on Monday, November 12, 2018, from 4:00 to 7:00 pm at A.T. Hutchins Funeral Home, a funeral service will be held on Tuesday, November 13, 2018, at 11:00 am at the funeral home. Burial will follow in Woodlawn Cemetery in Westbrook.
