Norman D. Murray 81, of Portland, Maine passed away on December 9, 2018, after a courageous battle with Alzheimer’s disease. Norman was born June 30, 1937, to Earl and Anna (Greenleaf) Murray. He graduated from Hallowell High School and went on to serve in the Air Force, where he was stationed in Korea.

He later attended the University of Southern Maine. On July 22, 1961, Norman married Celeste Moody. Together they had two children.

Norman was a dedicated husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather who took extreme pleasure in doting on his grandchildren. Norman worked for Nichols Portland, retiring after 35 years. He was active in Junior Achievement and the president of the Home and School Association at St. Patrick’s School.

In addition, he was also involved in the annual church bazaars. Norman and his close friend Victor Huck spent countless hours on woodworking projects to sell at the bazaar. In his later years, Norman enjoyed fishing and gardening, but most of all, he enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren.

Norman was a very quiet, reserved man, who would put the needs of others ahead of his own. He was a very generous man who was known as the neighborhood handyman. He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Celeste of Portland; his son Scott Murray and his wife, Patti of Oakland, Maine; his daughter, Barbara Childs of Waterboro, Maine; seven grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.

He is predeceased by his parents and older sister, Margaret. The family would like to thank Norman’s caregivers for their loving and compassionate care; especially Angela, Denise, Brenda, Kasie, Ellen, Kayla, MaryAnn, and Mistowat. A special thanks to Deb Gagne for her wonderful support.

In lieu of flowers if friends or family desire a memorial contribution in Norman’s name can be made to the Animal Refuge League of Greater Portland. 217 Landing Road, Westbrook, ME 04092 Visiting Hours will be held on Friday, December 14, 2018, from 4:00 to 6:00 PM with a memorial service to follow at 6:00 PM at A.T. Hutchins Funeral Home 660 Brighton Avenue. Inurnment will be on Tuesday, December 18, 2018, in the Central Maine Veterans Cemetery in Augusta.

Committal Prayers and Military Honors will be held in the chapel on Mt.
