Leon E. Hawkes, Jr. 88, of Portland, passed away peacefully on Sunday, October 28, 2018, after a long illness, with family & friends by his side. Mr. Hawkes was born in Portland, ME. , the son of Madeleine C. and Leon E. Hawkes, SR.

He attended local schools and graduated from Deering High School in 1948. He also attended Shaw’s Business School and was a graduate of Portland Junior College (Westbrook Jr. College), Portland, ME. , where he earned a degree in business.

He served in the U.S. Air Force as an Airman 1st Class during the Korean Conflict. Mr. Hawkes was a member of the American Legion for 60 years. He served at the Portland, Yarmouth, Falmouth & Gray, ME.

posts. He held the positions of Post Commander and Cumberland County Commander. He was an active member of local church choirs and the Portland Men’s Singing Club.

He was also one of the original founders of the Maine Aviation Historical Society. Mr. Hawkes retired in 1992 after being employed by Solomon, Smith & Barney, Portland, ME. , for 37 years, as a Computer Wire Operator.

In his spare time, Mr. Hawkes was an avid movie historian, known by many as “Mr. Movie”. Mr. Hawkes was a loyal fan of the Boston Red Sox and the New England Patriots. He enjoyed watching the games as televised.

Mr. Hawkes enjoyed listening to “big band,” “classical” and “bagpipe “music. The love of his life was his devoted pet poodle, “Bon – “Bon,” who he took special care of for 18 years. He also enjoyed spending time and sharing many happy memories with his childhood and beloved friend of many years, Charlotte Bryant of Yarmouth, ME.

He is survived by his sons, Lawrence E. Hawkes & future daughter-in-law, Beth A. Davis of Westbrook, ME. and Jonathan C. Hawkes of Brunswick, ME. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Animal Refuge League of Greater Portland, Westbrook, ME.

320, Bangor, ME. 04401 in honor of Mr. Hawkes’ son, “Jonathan”. A graveside service and burial will take place at a later date.
