James E. Mayer, age 88, of Geneva, passed away Friday, October 26, 2018 at Delnor Hospital in Geneva surrounded by his loving family. He was born December 27, 1929 in Chicago, the son of Harry and Nora (Rosenbarger) Mayer. James served his country in the United States Army during the Korean conflict.

He received both his Bachelors and Masters from NIU University in DeKalb and his MBA from the University of Illinois at Chicago. Mr. Mayer taught many years at Coultrap Middle School in Geneva. He was an avid sports fan especially the Cubs and Blackhawks.

He always enjoyed a good meal and family and friends. He is survived by his wife of 62 years Mary (Slaymaker); children Linda (Scott) Abernethy of West Chicago, Andrew (Lillian) of Geneva, and Amy (Davin Wickstrom) Mayer of Geneva; daughter-in-law Cynthia Mayer of North Carolina; grandchildren Ben (Heidi) Popovich, Caroline (Jeff) Oldham, Jake Abernethy, Kelly (Peter) Berardi, Alexander Mayer, & Nathaniel Wickstrom. He was preceded in death by his parents, sister Faye Mallory, and his son Tom.

Visitation will be held Friday, November 2, 2018 from 3:00 pm until the time of his memorial service at 7:30 pm at Malone Funeral Home, 324 E. State Street (Route 38), Geneva with Reverend Loy Williams officiating. Interment will be held privately. In lieu of flowers, memorials made to Hines VA Hospital, 5000 5th Avenue, Hines, Illinois 60141 would be appreciated.
