He served in the ASAF. He retired from Bell Helicopter after 26 years. He lived in Arlington for 48 years.

James is survived by his wife of 62 years, Ada; children, James Jr. and his wife, Heather, of Rosemond, CA, Anthony and his wife, Kelly of Arlington, brother, John Snodgrass of Bluff City, TN, sisters, Lois Mattison of Linden, MI, Francis Craig of Cuyahoga Falls, OH, Linda Bies of Lexington, KY, Bonnie Atwell of Bristol TN, his beloved grandchildren, Ryan, Zachary, Kaden, Millie, Haylon; and granddogs.
