Ely of Milton-Freewater passed away on March 13, 2019 in Walla Walla at the age of 80 years. A memorial mass will be held on Saturday, March 23, 2019 at 5:00 p.m. at St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church in Milton-Freewater. James Louis Ely was born on November 2, 1938 in Pendleton, Oregon to Charles and Dora (Rice) Ely.

James graduated from Walla Walla High School in 1956. After high school he began hauling livestock for his step-father. On December 31, 1960 James married Carolyn Joyce Van Doren.

Together the couple raised three sons. In 1969 James acquired the livestock trucking business after his mother’s death. He transported livestock all over the west coast.

In his free time James enjoyed fishing. Survivors include his sons, Jeff Ely of Tigard, Oregon, Ken Ely of Milton-Freewater and James Ely of College Place; 12 grandchildren; 4 great-grandchildren and other relatives and friends. His parents, wife Carolyn and sisters, Teresa Durfee and Charlene Short all preceded him in death.
