Survived by his loving wife Claudia and his children James, Jacki, Nate, and Cynthia; and his 6 siblings Harvey, Carol, Calvin, Lyle, Jay, and LaRae. In his early years he loved baseball and repairing and riding his motorcycles with his good friend Spike. He was an adventurous person and loved trying to do what everyone thought he couldn’t.
Dad served a 2 year mission to New Zealand from 1958 to 1960. He learned to love the people and help them in many aspects from teaching the gospel to helping the Maori people in any ways. He had many extraordinary experiences.
James graduated from BYU in 1964 with a degree in accounting. He left to take a job in Las Vegas with Ashworth and Arnold Accounting shortly thereafter. He quickly found that accounting was not his desired profession and only worked there for about 18 months.
In 1964 he met the love of his life in Las Vegas at a dance in a local church. After some humorous first meetings they dated and were married in the Idaho Falls temple. All the children remember how much he loved his wife and always vocalized how he felt.
He would often call her his angel and talk about being the luckiest man on earth. Dad worked for 25 years at IBM as a systems engineer in which he programmed mainframe computers. He was known throughout the Las Vegas valley for his skill and expertise at setting these computer up and custom programming them to achieve the desire purpose.
He received multiple awards and recognition including many high achievement awards from IBM. Dad was loved by all he worked with – coworkers and clients alike. In his later years he loved spending time with his wife and children.
He loved the outdoors and hiking up mount Charleston in the spring mountain range west of the Las Vegas Valley. His son’s cherished those adventures and camping out on the meadow just before the peak. There was always time to stargaze with a fuzzy soda in hand at high elevation.
Dad purchased an inflatable rubber raft and enjoyed rafting down the Colorado river as it exited lake mead. He also loved his horses and had several through his life. He loved riding with Cynthia and she has many fond memories of being on the horses for rides with dad.
She particularly remembers the time when they both tried to double ride on old chestnut together and both ended bucked off on the front lawn! Jacki recalls the incredible time and dedication that he gave to help her learn how to count money. She has become very successful and one of the top cashiers at the local movie theater for more than 20 years as a result of those efforts.
In his later years dad suffered from diagnosed Alzheimer’s which robbed him of much of the time with his grandchildren. He valiantly fought that disease for more than 18 years. James P. Crandall peacefully left this world to join those who have gone before on March 26, 2019.
