Steven Trent Huff June 11, 1935 – May 24, 2019 Share this obituary Send Flowers Sign Guestbook| Send Sympathy Card Steven Trent Huff was born on June 11, 1935 to James Lewis and Doris Louise Stevens Huff in Montrose, Pennsylvania. He was the oldest of five children who were very close together in age. Growing up, Steve lived a nomadic childhood living in 22 different homes in 21 years, mostly in New York state, with his siblings Jacqueline Ann Huff, Marcia Lee Huff Gass, James Lewis Huff Jr (deceased), and Linda Lou Huff Sutton (Jim).
As a child Steve collected kapok plants to sell during the second world war to make life preserver jackets, sold newspapers, and picked coal on the railroad tracks to heat their home. He sang his first solo in church at age 9. In 1951 Steve and his family traveled to New York City to watch the Break the Bank live radio show.
The producer liked Steve’s brilliant red hair, so Steve and his mother were chosen to participate on the show. Steve’s mother correctly answered the winning trivia question about opera singers, so the family won the radio show’s contest and $3450. Then Steve’s mother promptly fainted!
The family was treated to ice cream sundaes and an overnight hotel stay in New York City. In 1957 Steve joined the U.S. Navy and served as an electronics tech for radar on the ship U.S.S. Wasp sailing in the Atlantic Ocean. He has regaled us with stories of planes landing and pushing the admiral’s helicopter off the ship into the ocean or planes stripping off their landing gear at takeoff.
Some of the ship’s duties were picking up the first astronauts out of the ocean. He was honorably discharged in 1961. In 1962 Steve married Joan Stephenson in California and she passed in 2002.
To this marriage were born Crystal Ann Huff Lopes (David) and Steven Robert Huff (Lagaya), as well as four grandchildren—Erik, Ryan, Stephanie, and Stanly. In 2002 at the age of 67, Steve joined the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Shortly thereafter, he met Patricia Tracy Hart in Roseville, California, and they were married in Oakland California in 2003.
Steve and Pat lived in Roseville, California before moving to Lehi, Utah in 2005. Steve was a wonderful stepfather to Pat’s children Paul Hart (Becky), Katy Hart Carroll (Dustin), Emily Hart Cummings (Jeremy), and Sandy Hart Wengreen (Eric). He was also a beloved grandfather to Pat’s 13 grandchildren—Jacob, Matthew, Hannah, Adam, Abby, Gabe, Jack, Luke, Easton, Samantha, Shelby, Benson, and Owen.
Steve remained a faithful member of the LDS church. He served with his wife Pat as a temple worker in the Oakland California and Mt. Timpanogos Utah temples.
He also served with Pat on two missions in Cove Fort Utah and the Mosida Trek Site near Utah Lake. In his later years Steve indexed 15,000 family history names and gathered more than 400 of his own family ancestors. Steve loved to go camping, golfing, and traveling in a motorhome.
His rich, deep bass voice could soothe fussy babies to sleep and thrill children who thought he was Santa Claus. His white hair and deep “Ho, Ho, Ho’s” were authentic. Steve was a kind and gentle man who always answered, “Just Great!
” when asked how things were (even if they weren’t). Steve passed away on May 24, 2019 after a short illness. The family wishes to thank staff at Harmony Hills Assisted Living, Encompass Hospice, and Wentworth at Draper Assisted Living for their loving, compassionate care of Steve.
The world lost a great man whose cheery optimism will be missed. Graveside services will be Friday, May 31, 2019 at 1:30 PM in the Lehi City Cemetery, 400 N. 1100 E. Friends and family may call Thursday evening from 6-8:00 PM at Wing Mortuary, 118 E. Main, Lehi.
