OBITUARY Jan Carruthers Stevens April 6, 1942 – July 14, 2018 Jan Carruthers Stevens, 76, formerly of Houston and Fairfield, passed away Saturday, July 14, 2018 in Mesquite, TX. Jan was born April 6, 1942 in McCamey to parents Robert Lee and Ruth Eloise Carruthers. After graduating from Bellaire High School in 1960, Jan earned BSEd.
in Math Education from Abilene Christian University in 1964 and a MEd. from Stephen F. Austin State University. Jan taught high school math courses at several Texas schools (in Houston, Corsicana, Palestine, and Mexia) and taught college math courses for Navarro CC and Trinity Valley Community College.
Jan was a Den Leader for many years in the Cub Scouts of America, was extremely active writing curriculum and teaching children’s Bible classes at several churches and raised four young men. She was an avid film buff, loved to travel and keep close social ties with friends, most notably her Houston friends and the women of GATA social club. She is preceded in death by her husband of 47 years, John Arliss Stevens of Houston and Fairfield, Tex.
Left to remember her are sons Rick Stevens (44) of Boulder, Colo. ; David (41) and Michelle Stevens of Carrollton, Tex. ; James (38) And Cyndee Stevens of Abilene, Tex.
; Charles (36) and Emily Stevens of Kigali, Rwanda; and Michelle Stevens of Abilene, Tex. She is survived by six grandchildren (Bradley, Aubrey, Alyssa, Joshua, Chloe, and Peter), as well as her mother Eloise, and her brothers Bob Carruthers of Woodson, Tex. ; and Bill Carruthers of Dallas, Tex.
