JANE RATHER THIEBAUD January 13, 1936 ~ April 29, 2018 Jane Rather Thiebaud passed away on Sunday, April 29, 2018 at the Ray Hickey Hospice House in Vancouver, Washington. She was 82. The daughter of James B. Rather, Jr. and Lillian Townsend Rather, she was born in Beaumont, Texas on January 13, 1936, raised in Plandome, New York and lived in Switzerland for more than 30 years before returning to the United States.

She had lived in Vancouver about ten years. In recent years, Jane frequented Clark College and volunteered at the Vancouver Campus of the VA Portland Health Care System. A 1953 graduate of Manhasset High School in Manhasset, New York and, in 1957, from Sweet Briar College in Sweet Briar, Virginia, she later earned an M.A. in the Teaching of French Culture and Language and a Ph.D. in Interdisciplinary Studies at the University of Maine.

Her great interest was in French language, culture and lifestyle. In her work in Switzerland and the United States she sought to promote harmonious human relations and joyful living. She married Rene-Blaise Thiebaud, a Swiss lawyer, in 1961.

He died in 1967. A second marriage to Jean-Claude Ivar Petterson, a Swiss artisan and activist, ended in divorce. She married Luc Guimond, an agronomist from Quebec, in 1997.

In addition to Mr. Guimond, she is survived by a brother, John Townsend Rather and six nieces and nephews. Jane’s parents and a brother, James B. Rather III, predeceased her. A Memorial Service is planned at the Congregational Church of Manhasset in Manhasset, New York.
