WILLIAMSPORT – Janet D. (Diggs) Trice, 90, passed away Monday, January 7, 2019 at UPMC Susquehanna. She was married to the late Sylvester E. Trice who had passed away in 1969. Janet was born on November 28, 1928 in Williamsport and was the daughter of the late Clarence and Olive (Harris) Diggs, Sr

She graduated from Williamsport High School in 1946. Janet had worked at HUD during the time of Hurricane Agnes and then worked and retired from Lycoming/Clinton County Commission for Community Action (STEP) as SSAP program director in 1995. She was a member of the Maple Street AME Zion Church, was Daughter Ruler at the Edgar Stills Lodge.

Janet had recruited children for the first head start program for Lycoming County, was the first black woman to run for school board, helped organize the first food bank, and as a community organizer, she arranged for teenage girls to clean up the Civil War Veterans Cemetery on Freedom Road. She enjoyed music, playing the air guitar, crossword puzzles and was an avid gardener. She was well known as a good cake baker.

Janet is survived by two sons; Mitchel W. Trice and David S. Trice, both of Williamsport, seven grandchildren; Megan, Rachel, David, James, Keon, Christina and Gia and four great-grandchildren; Keara, Xander, Miguel and Mahki. In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by one daughter; Dawnann Goins and siblings; Samuel Parker, Clarence Diggs, II, Nancy Diggs, George Diggs, Sr. and Carl Diggs. There will be a public viewing 12 – 1 p.m. Saturday, January 19, 2019 at the Maneval Allen Redmond Funeral Home, 500 West 4th Street, Williamsport where the funeral will begin at 1:00 p.m. Earlirene Chapman will officiate the service.

Burial will be private at the convenience of the family.
