Obituary for Janet W. Norrod Mrs. Janet (Wespe) Norrod, 86, died on October 17, 2018 at the Cheyenne Healthcare Center. She was born on November 10. 1931 in Cheyenne to John and Elsie Mae (Rose) Wespe.
She played flute in the high school band, as well as the piano and violin. She graduated from Cheyenne High School in 1949 and obtainer her teaching degree from Tennessee Technological Institute and a master’s degree in Library Science from the University of Denver. She was introduced to her husband, William T. Norrod, by her cousin while attending the University of New Mexico.
Her husband was career Air Force and they were stationed in Taiwan from which she still has the tea canister given to her by Madam Chiang Kai-Shek. They were also stationed in New Mexico, Maine, Louisiana, Kentucky, and California. She spent 18 days on a troop transport with two young boys when they transferred to Taiwan and three days on the SS United States when they went to England.
She moved back to Cheyenne in 1971 where she worked as a substitute teacher, taught part-time at LCCC, and retired from the Laramie County Library as manager of the children’s section. She received the Wyoming State Librarian Association Distinguished Service Award in 1996, several other awards from the Wyoming State Library Association, Positively Cheyenne Award from Lite 106 in 1994, several letters of appreciation from various schools in Cheyenne, and was the Interim County Librarian in 1990. She was a charter member of the Red Hat Society, Wyoming State Museum volunteer of the year in 2013, was selected for and participated in a cultural exchange program with the People’s Republic of China, was a member of First Presbyterian Church of Cheyenne, and in retirement she volunteered at Home Away from Home at the Cheyenne Regional Medical Center.
She is survived by three sons, Michael J. Norrod of Cheyenne, Tim B. Norrod (Barbara) of Brooks, Georgia, and David A. Norrod of Cheyenne; seven grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents; three brothers; her husband; and one son. Services will be Monday, 9:30 a.m. at Wiederspahn-Radomsky Chapel, followed by burial in Cheyenne Memorial Gardens.
