OBITUARY Jarvis H. Hulst September 25, 1930 – January 13, 2019 – A Requiem Mass for the repose of the soul of Jarvis Harold Hulst will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, January 17, 2019, at The Church of the Good Shepherd (Episcopal), 1512 Blanding Street, Columbia, SC, 29201. He was 88 when he passed away on Sunday, January 13, 2019, at his home in Columbia. Burial will be in the parish memorial garden.

Jarvis was a loving and devoted husband and doting father, possessed with a warm and gentle spirit. His instant and infectious smile lit up the room and brought joy to everyone in his presence. He loved music, the theater, the beach, his many friends, his family, and his parish church.

Jarvis was an active member for the past 30 years of The Church of the Good Shepherd, where he served enthusiastically on the Flower Guild and the Altar Guild and, earlier, sang in the choir. Jarvis was born in Overisel Township, Michigan, in 1930, and moved with his family to Florida as a teenager. He joined the U.S. Army during the Korean War and was stationed at Camp Jackson, Camp Gordon and at Communications Headquarters in Frankfurt, Germany, where he served in the Signal Corp; he was awarded the Occupation Medal (Germany) and the National Defense Service Medal.

He married Laura Margaret Newell in 1954, and they moved to Columbia in 1963. In 1974, he graduated from the University of South Carolina, where he sang with Carolina Alive and, with Laura, enjoyed the camaraderie of a younger generation of talented singers. He retired in 1990 from the Lexington County Assessor’s Office.

He is survived by his wife, Laura; their daughter, Suzi Clawson and her husband, Robert; brothers, Bernnie Arndt (Vivian) and Eldon Arndt (Cheryl); sisters, Ardith Jackson (Trenton) and Marrietta Keeler; nieces and nephews, Jonathan, Joseph, Elizabeth, Matthew, Ben, Andrew, Vicki, Christy, Andrew, Laverda, Cathy, Jackie, Buddy, Jinny and Debe; and beloved kitties Koko and YumYum. He is predeceased by his brother, Wayne Arndt. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the church.

The family would like to extend its many thanks to Saints Darcy, Liliane and Jackie with Amedisys Hospice; Saint Lexy with FirstLight Home Care; Marti, Kena, the support group leaders and the volunteers at Leeza’s Care Connection, our lifeline for the past two years; and all of our Good Shepherd family.
