Jeffrey (Jeff) Bernard Roberts, 48, of Washington Ave. in Asbury Park, NJ, was born on February 14, 1971, at Monmouth Medical Center in Long Branch, NJ to Diane Roberts and Rufus Stephens. He departed this life on Saturday, February 16, 2019, at Bayshore Hospital in Holmdel, NJ.
Jeffrey received his early education in the Asbury Park Public School District and graduated high school from Shore Regional High School in West Long Branch, NJ. Jeff was lovingly known as “Hot Wheelz,” not only for his wheelchair but for his “go hard, or go home” love for life attitude. Jeff lived his life not as handicapped but as handicapable.
He LOVED his family, his friends and his community and never missed an opportunity to show this in his actions. Jeff could often be found re-directing and inspiring the youth of his community in a fun-loving and relatable way…giving them rides on his wheelchair! He ENJOYED his music, and lived by the words, “Rap is what you do, hip-hop is how you live,” and he truly did.
Listening to Nas, and gaining motivation to do more to make his community an enjoyable place, while also being responsible in every way he could for his family, especially his loving mother and pop; his nieces and nephews Joyel Mitchel, Nicole Perry, Tiffany Vernon, Theresa Maxie, Anai Butler, Andrea Perry, Stephaney Markham, Kevin Canty, Gregory “Tareek” Washington, and Rodney Taylor, whom he often lovingly referred to as his brothers and sisters. He loved watching sports and also loved turning his music waaaaaay up and setting the vibe to get the party started with Biggie and Jay-Z or Meek Mills. Hot Wheelz was also known for his lit street fashions, especially his sneakers.
He was always known for rocking the latest “J’s” in his sweat suits, or his hoodie and jeans in his black Timberlands. Jeff also loved the ladies…he had many close friends that he gave his undivided attention or the shirt off his back if they needed it. He never failed to show them his appreciation and care.
Jeffrey was predeceased by his biological father Rufus Stephens; maternal grandparents, Willie Bell Maxie and Johnnie Will Maxie; uncles, Johnny Will Hawk, Jimmie Lee Roberts, and Luther Markham, III; nephew, Alim “Mook” Canty; and his beloved dog Bruno. Jeffrey leaves to cherish his memory his parents, Diane and Luther Markham; brothers, Eric Williams, Christopher Stephens (Ga. ); sisters, Tonya Markham-Canty, Cheryl Morgan, Judy Douglas, Sameerah Keith, Tara Keith, and Tijuana Stephens (Ga); uncles, Rickie Maxie (Janine), Gregory Maxie, Terrance Murrell, and Johnnie Maxie; and aunt, Nadine Graham.
Dear to his heart; Kuaron Markham, Kevin Markham, Jr., Dashawn Sample, Keshawn Sample, and Ah’Ryan Gary, along with a host of cousins, nieces, nephews, friends, loved ones, and his dogs, Brownie, Felicia and Houdini. The family wishes to acknowledge all of the outpouring of sympathy and condolences from everyone that called, prayed and provided acts of kindness to us all during this time of bereavement. It is greatly appreciated.
