Obituary Service Details Joan G. Leonall, 80, of Mullet Lake, passed away Tuesday, July 11, 2017 at her home. A lifelong resident of the area, Joan was born December 30, 1936 in Cheboygan, the daughter of Carl and Elizabeth (Peets) Leonall. After graduation from Cheboygan High School, she attended Central Michigan University graduating with a Bachelor of Science degree in physical education.

Upon graduating she coached at Ferris State Institute. She taught school in Roscommon, Alpena, and for 21 years in Cheboygan, and was instrumental in starting the girls’ varsity basketball, track, and volleyball teams. In the 1950’s, she helped start the first girls’ softball teams, the Cheboygan City Girls, vs.

the Country Girls, and pitched for over 15 years. She also coached the Cheboygan junior varsity and varsity basketball and track teams for over 10 years, which included several championship teams and a girl’s regional title in basketball in 1978. After her retirement from teaching in 1987, she worked as a bookkeeper at Leonall Drug and the Prescription Place in Cheboygan.

Joan enjoyed riding and raising horses, and was an avid gardener, and was a member of the Cheboygan Golf & Country Club which she one of the top ladies’ golfer Championship more than once. Surviving are, nieces and nephews, Dennis (Pamela) Fyke, Barry Fyke, Brett Fyke, Carl (Charlene) Leonall, Tina Leonall, and Diane Leonall and sister-in-law, Carol Leonall, eight great nephews and nieces, a great-great nephew and a niece, and cousins Trudy Gilbert (Peets) and Henry Peets. She was preceded in death by her parents, a brother Victor Leonall, a sister, Elizabeth “B.

J” Fyke, and a nephew, Michael Fyke. A memorial service will be held on Tuesday, July 10, 2018 at 10:30 am at St. James Episcopal Church in Cheboygan, with Rev. Lewis Crusoe officiating.
