Joan Pence’s Obituary Joan (Vester) Pence Stefaniak, 94, of Lafayette died January 20, 2019 at IU Health Arnett. She was born October 7, 1924 in Lafayette to the late Frank J. and Nellie (Burton) Vester. She graduated from Lafayette Jefferson High School.

She went on to work at Eli Lilly and then married Paul Pence. Together, they developed the Capilano residential area in West Lafayette. On September 28, 2001, Joan married Dr. Jerome J. “Jerry” Stefaniak in Delray Beach, FL.

Jerry preceded her in death on February 18, 2016. Joan was a member of First Christian Church in Lafayette. She was a member of a bridge and gardening club and enjoyed bird watching.

She loved to play slots and poker and was very successful when she did. She was a loving grandmother and she is survived by grandson, Todd (Diane) Grundberg of Clarendon Hills, IL; their children (her great grandsons), Nick, Luke, Max, and Sammy Grundberg; son-in-law, Richard Meyer of West Lafayette; Jerry’s son, Paul (Lori) Stefaniak and their daughters, Ashley and Taylor; great granddaughter Avery; and Jerry’s daughter, Lynn (Steve) Ginn and their children, Brian and Erin. Along with husbands, Jerry and Paul, she was preceded in death by her parents; her daughter, Karen Meyer; and 3 brothers, Burt, Frank, and Jack Vester.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be given to the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation, 10401 N. Meridian St, Suite 150, Indianapolis, IN 46290 or www. jdrf.org. Envelopes will be available at the church.

Visitation will be from 10:30 am until time of service at 11:30 am, Friday, January 25, 2019 at First Christian Church, 329 N. 6th Street, Lafayette, IN 47901 with Pastor Andrew Guthrie officiating. Entombment will follow at Tippecanoe Memory Gardens in West Lafayette.
