OBITUARY Joel Mitchell August 22, 1923 – November 9, 2018 On Friday, November 9, 2018, Joel Mitchell, loving husband and father of three, passed away at age 95. Joel was born on August 22, 1923 in Boston, MA and raised in Marblehead. In the fall of his senior year at Marblehead High Joel left to serve his country by enlisting in the US Navy.

Joel saw action in the South Pacific while serving on the USS David W. Taylor (DD551) and other vessels; he served in the Army of the Occupation of Japan after the war and continued to proudly serve until his retirement as a Senior Chief Petty Officer in 1964. Joel enjoyed many passions, reading, doing his crosswords, searching for treasures at yard sales or local flea markets and watching his beloved Red Sox and Patriots. Joel always looked forward to his yearly week at the Margate on Lake Winnipesaukee with his family and especially his beloved grandchildren Joel, Jesse, Rebecca, Michael, Hannah, Cameron and Colin.

Joel was preceded in death by his daughter, Susan D. (Mitchell) Guptill. He is survived by his wife, Claire with whom he shared 65 years of marriage and his two adult children, John and Stephen. A graveside service with honors will be held in the Veterans Section of Waterside Cemetery, 294 West Shore Drive, Marblehead on Tuesday, November 27 at 11AM.
