Joey was born on July 9, 1962 in Burlington, NC. Joseph Leon Sellars and the late Lillie Beatrice Garland Sellars.

He is survived by three sons, Timothy Leon Sellars, Tyrone Sellars, Tevin Devonne Sellars, Terrance Lamont Saunders, and Joey Leon Sellars, Jr. who preceded him in death. Three daughters, Tamasina Diane Sellars Hackney, and Miracle Thomas. Three brothers, the late Minister Tracey Alonzo Sellars, Eric D. Sellars and Christopher C. Sellars.

Three sisters, Pamela Renee Sellars, Telethia L. Sellars, and Shekeitha L. Sellars and a host of grandchildren, nieces, nephews and friends. Joey attended Bartlett Yancey High School, Alamance Community College and Danville Community College receiving earning many credentials including certifications in Computer Programming. A multi-talented musician, he started his musicianship at an early age as a singer and lead guitarist with the Related Juniors Gospel quartet group.

He would go on to become a profound gospel recording artist, keyboardist and minister of music at many churches in multiples states . He also recorded with various gospel quartets throughout North Carolina and Virginia. Joey received a heart transplant in January of 2014, and spent his remaining days bringing joy, peace love and encouragement to others through gospel music.
