Obituary for John A. Metzner Jr. John A. Metzner Jr., 87, of Delphos, passed away Saturday afternoon, November 25, 2017, at Vancrest of Delphos. His Family…. He was born May 23, 1930 in St. Rita’s Hospital, Lima to John and Marie (Koester) Metzner Sr., who both preceded him in death.
John met Joan Deters in Rome, Italy in 1950 while both were in college and traveling for the Holy Year. On November 27, 1952, John and Joan were married. Joan survives in Delphos.
He is also survived by three sons, John ‘Jay’ (Deb Oney) Metzner III, Joseph Timothy (Barbara) Metzner Sr. and Michael (Cynthia) Metzner Sr., all of Delphos; three daughters, Paula Dinkins of Ottoville, Ann (Maurice) Chung of Lima and Julie (Dan, Jr.) Dalton of Cincinnati; twenty grandchildren, Theodore Kill (Megan Martin), Amanda Kill (Anthony Morabito) and Michael (Katrina) Kill, John ‘Jace’ (Amanda) Metzner IV, Meghan (Philip) Coil, Zachary (Rene) Metzner, Andrew Dinkins, Joseph (Stefanie) Metzner II, Matthew Metzner, Paul (Aimee) Metzner, and Gabrielle Metzner, Cherie, Chermin ‘Mimi’, Tiffany, Lisa and Kathryn ‘Katie’ Chung, Michael (Chelsey) Metzner Jr., Luke Metzner, Sarah Metzner and Daniel Dalton III; twenty-one great-grandchildren, Camille ‘Coco’, Celia and Florence Kill, Liliana and Genevieve Morabito, and Evelyn Kill, Troy Smith, Colt Cross, Maxwell and Sophia Metzner, Camden and Olivia Coil, Brooklyn, Lincoln, Evelyn and Carolyn Mueller, Kaelyn and Haylee Dinkins, Lance and Rosalie Metzner, and Claire Metzner; Godchildren, Sr. Sue Scherger, Janet Shenk Laird, Joan Deters Paisley, Andrew Deters and David Deters; and special friends of the family, Michael and Susan Klaus and children, Gavin, Robin and Ian. He was preceded in death by four daughters, Mary Jo ‘JoJo’ Metzner, Mary Catherine ‘Casey’ Metzner, Marian Rose ‘Sis’ Metzner, and Celeste Marie Metzner Bushnell; and siblings, Rosemary and Louis Scherger, and Hilda Metzner. John was a 1948 graduate of Delphos St. John’s High School, participating at State in track and field as a sprinter in 1948. In 1952 he graduated from Ohio Northern University, and in 1955 from ONU Pettit College of Law. While in law school, John sold insurance for Metzner-Van Pelt Insurance Company.
After law school he was a partner in Marsh, Minzing and Metzner Attorneys at Law. In the 1970s he was a Delphos City Solicitor. He was drafted into the United States Army during the Korean War, earning the rank of Corporal, he was discharged June 18, 1954.
John was a lifelong member of St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church. He was a Life Scout of the Boy Scouts of America. At age 14 he drove a milk truck, filling in for the regular drivers who were away at war.
John was a ticket taker for over 30 years for the Blue Jay football and girls’ basketball games. He was a member of Knights of Columbus Council 1362 as a Grand Knight. He was a member of Allen County Bar Association, Allen County Republican Club, Delphos Eagles Aerie 471, the Delphos Club and Delphos Optimist Club.
John loved: his beautiful wife, Joan; his children and family; the Catholic church; Oreos, M&M’s, Hershey Chocolate; the DSJ Blue Jays; hosting Wednesday night family dinner at the Metzner house; word search puzzles with highlighters; lottery tickets with the goal of winning the mega-millions; Clark Party at the Rustic on Saturdays at noon. His Farewell Services. … Mass of Christian Burial will begin at 1:30 p.m. on Friday, December 1 at St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church, the Rev.
Charles Obinwa, officiating. Burial will follow in St. John’s Cemetery with military graveside honors conducted by Delphos Veterans Council. Visitation will be 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. on Friday at Weber Funeral Home, 1840 E. Fifth Street, Delphos.
