John D. Spear, 74, of La Porte, IN, passed away peacefully early Thursday, November 22, 2018 at his home in La Porte, IN. He was born on December 12, 1943, in Morgan Township, Porter County, IN, to the late Harry George and Suzanne (Strban) Spear. He is survived by his loving wife, Sharry; brother, Louis R. Spear of Kingsbury, IN; sisters, Anna (Robert) Salay of Cadillac, MI and Mary Jane Goad of Fort Worth, TX; sister-in-law, Mary Ann Spear Pennington; and numerous cousins, nieces… Read More » and nephews.

In addition to his parents, Harry and Suzanne Spear, John was preceded in death by brothers, George Spear and his wife, Charlotte (Hansen) Spear, of Quincy, IL, James Spear of La Porte, Clarence Spear of Sturgis, MI and Capt. William A. Spear; and sister, Susanna Spear and her husband, Robert C. Brown, of South Bend. In his teenage years, the Spear family moved from Valparaiso to a farm in Kankakee Township, La Porte County, where John attended Rolling Prairie High School and graduated in 1961.

He served in the US Army. John was engaged in farming in the early years of his lifetime. He spent many years in maintenance at Dietrich Industries, La Porte.

He had a love of the land and natural res and a real talent for sculpting beautiful outdoor landscape settings for others to enjoy. John developed the Forest Lake Estates subdivision in La Porte, followed by the Whisper Isle subdivision in La Porte, providing many families a stunning natural environment to build their homes. A memorial gathering will be held from 2 – 4 p.m., Tuesday, November 27, 2018 at Lakeview Funeral Home and Crematory, 247 W. Johnson, La Porte (219) 362-3100.
