John E. Gallegos passed away peacefully, in his home, surrounded by his loving wife, Benita and their children on Saturday, May 25, 2019, just shy of his 74th birthday. He is now freed from his long, courageous fight with Non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma. John was born June 5, 1945 in Ogden, Utah to Jose Carlos and Lilly M. where he grew up with his family and friends, while attending Ogden City Schools.
In 1968, he joined the U.S. Army fighting in the Vietnam War as a hero to our Country. Years later he developed Non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma from Agent Orange which renewed the fight. He bravely fought the cancer for 12 years 3 months while still enjoying his life with his wife, family, and friends beside him.
On February 14, 1989, John married Benita, joining their six children Trisha, Barbara, Anita (born of his previous marriage to Martha), Christopher and Dustin (Kawa), and their daughter, Amanda. They celebrated 33 years 3 months together making the best of each moment. John retired after 32 years of combined service from Defense Logistics Agency Ogden, the Air Force as a civilian at HAFB, and Defense Depot Ogden.
He also previously worked for Jetway and served in the Army Reserves. He enjoyed restoring his Chevy muscle cars, fishing, camping, hunting, and spending time with his family. He always kept his love for life and his unique sense of humor.
John is survived by his wife, Benita; his sons, Christopher (Mandi) and Dustin (Courtnie); his daughters, Trisha (Terrance), Barbara, Anita (Tyrone), and Amanda (Joaquin); 14 grandchildren, 5 great-grandchildren, and his brother, Orlando; his sisters, Bertha, Francis, Maria (Carlos), June (Tony), and many nieces, nephews, and cousins. He was welcomed into heaven by his parents; his siblings, Carlos Jr, Gilbert, Dolores, Julia, Philbert, Diana, Helen, and his beloved grandson Brixton. A viewing will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. on Friday, 31 May 2019 at Lindquist’s Layton Mortuary, 1867 North Fairfield Rd.
The Holy Rosary will be recited at 7 p.m. The Funeral Mass will be held on Saturday, 1 June, 2019 at 10 a.m. at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, 4050 S. 3900 W., West Haven. Interment immediately following at Lindquist’s Memorial Gardens of the Wasatch, 1718 Combe Road, South Ogden. We would like to thank the Huntsman Cancer Hospital and all the doctors and nurses that helped care for us through the years, especially Dr. Martha Glenn’s team…Dr Glenn, Debbie, Jill, Erin who have been with us through this journey from the beginning…a very special heartfelt thank you and hugs, as you guys have been amazing!
