OBITUARY John Edward Gray, Sr. Passed away on September 9, 2018 John passed away September 9th (just one month shy of his 92nd birthday) at his Varina home with his loving wife of 71 years, Pauline, by his side. He was the youngest of 9 children (6 brothers and 3 sisters). John was born in Caroline County Virginia on October 1, 1926.
He graduated Varina High School in 1944, joined the US Army and was honorably discharged in 1945. He had pursued many employment opportunities in his 50+ working years. These included auto mechanic, gas station proprietor, parts manager, territory sales rep, volunteer fireman, owner/operator of a home fuel oil business and a landscaping business.
He is best known for his 30 + years in automobile sales. John was a dedicated member, officer, Commander & chaplain of the Varina Post 233 American Legion, a participating member of Four Mile Creek Baptist Church and a gregarious personality who will be remembered by all who knew him. He loved all sports, but the only one he made time for in his adult life was golf.
He was an avid and excellent golfer who also enjoyed working with his wife in the ½ acre garden behind his home. John’s first love was always his family, including his wife of 71 years, Pauline Throckmorton Gray, 2 children (son: John E (Eddie) Gray Jr., Teri; daughter: Joanne Gray Neisz, Bob); 6 grandchildren (Brad Gray, Amber; Amy Cox, Robbie; Eric Cox, Amber; Tammy Campbell, Jason; Matthew Gray & Merideth Gray); and 6 great grandchildren (Ethan Campbell, Samantha Cox, Kaylee May Carroll, Landon Gray, John Derick Anthony Cox, and Savannah Gray). We all loved him dearly and will miss him tremendously.
A memorial service will be scheduled in the next few weeks.
