John Slattery , November 16, 1929 — June 28, 2018

John Slattery, 88, of Scituate, passed away of natural causes Thursday, June 28th in Marshfield. He was born in Boston on November 16, 1929, the youngest of three children, to parents Robert Slattery and Lee Lane. His brother Robert Jr., and sister Mary are deceased.

He attended St. Sebastian’s Country Day School, Moses Brown School and Brown University, where he was a standout hockey player. At the age of 10 his family moved to Moss Hill in Jamaica Plain. Across the street lived the Mulhern family, the youngest girl of which, Joan, would later become his wife.

They married in 1953 and together they would raise six children: Ellen, Nan, Julie, Lee, John, and Peter. They remained devoted to each other for nearly sixty- five years, until Joan’s death in 2017. He is also survived by seven grandchildren: Maggie, Luke and Rose Kinnealey, Casey, Sophia, C.J. and Harry Slattery.

After college he entered the Army, where he was stationed at Thule Air Base in Greenland, during the Korean War. Upon being honorably discharged in 1957 he joined his brother and his father in the family business, Slattery Brothers, which for more than fifty years manufactured and sold leather to the major shoe and handbag companies in the US. He was a gifted and graceful athlete, touring with the 1952 US Olympic Men’s Hockey team before the Winter Games in Oslo, Norway.

He enjoyed skiing, tennis, and was a long time member of Woodland Golf Club in Newton, where he won multiple club champion titles. He and his wife Joan were also two-time husband and wife Mass State amateur golf champions. He traveled to the far reaches of the world both for business and with his family, spending summers at the beach on Cape Cod and Scituate, skiing the Alps, the Rockies and the Green Mountains of New England.

He was a beloved husband and father, a funny, kind and loyal friend to many and will be sorely missed by us all. A service will be held at St John the Evangelist Parish, 9 Glen Rd. , Wellesley, on Friday July 20th at 10 am.

A reception will follow at Woodland Golf Club, 1897 Washington St., Auburnadale. Please come and celebrate the wonderful life of our “Slatts”. In lieu of flowers kindly donate to The Francis Ouimet Scholarship Fund.
