Joseph F. Vander Wielen, age 90, of Appleton, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, May 15, 2018, at St. Paul Home in Kaukauna. Joe was born in Appleton on July 29, 1927, to the late John and Cresentia (Klein) Vander Wielen. Joe proudly served his country in the Army during World War II.

On September 17, 1955, he was united in marriage to Shirley Loewenhagen. The couple enjoyed 33 years together until her passing in 1988. Joe worked at Appleton Coated for 44 years, retiring in 1989.

He enjoyed hunting on his land in the Northwoods. He is survived by his son Paul (Kathy) Vander Wielen, Kaukauna; granddaughter Amanda (Travis) Brockman, Kaukauna; grandson Kyle (Amy) Vander Wielen, Kaukauna; great grandchild due in June; a brother, Ray (Rose) Vander Wielen, TN; a sister, Romona Schoelzel, Shiocton; and a sister-in-law, Lorraine Vander Wielen. He is further survived by numerous nieces and nephews.

Joe was preceded in death by his parents, wife, infant son Gregory, numerous brothers and a sister. A memorial service will take place at 11 am on Friday, May 18th in the Star of Hope Chapel at Highland Memorial Park, 3131 N. Richmond St. in Appleton, followed immediately by full military honors performed by the Jacob Coppus Legion Post #258. Friends may visit at the cemetery chapel on Friday from 10 am until the time of service.

The family would like to extend a special thank you to the staff of St. Paul Hospice and St. Paul Home for the compassionate care shown to Joe.
