A prayer service will be held on Friday, November 2, 2018 at 10:00 a.m. at the Clemente Funeral Home with a Mass of Christian Burial to be held at 10:30 a.m. at Christ Our Savior Parish/St. Nicholas Church, both in Struthers for Joseph P. Gentile, Sr., who passed away peacefully on the evening of October 29, 2018. Joseph was born June 19, 1926 in Somerset, PA, a son of Anthony and Liberata DelSignor Gentile. His family came to the Youngstown area in the early 1930s.

Joseph served in the U.S. Navy during WWII as a Seaman First Class and after the war he trained to be a mechanic working at Republic Steel starting in 1948, and worked his way up to foreman retiring in 1984. He started Gentile Construction from where he retired in 2006. He was a member of Christ Our Savior Parish/St. Nicholas Church where he helped with many projects, including installing the handicap entrances.

He was president of the St. Anthony’s Society and founder of its Bocce League, and helped with the building of the indoor bocce court. He was tax commissioner in Struthers in the early 1960s. Joseph was also a member of the K of C Council 4471 as a third degree.

He was an avid hunter and enjoyed taking his grandchildren to his hunting cabin in the mountains of Kane, PA. Joseph was a member of one of the largest families in the area and enjoyed entertaining family and friends as a self taught musician mastering the accordion and guitar. After returning from the service Joseph married his sweetheart, the former Eleanor DiCicco, February 18, 1946 and they were married for seventy-two years.

Besides his wife, he leaves his children, Mary Sandra (Richard) Florek of Catalina, AZ, Joseph P. Gentile, Jr. of Struthers, Marlene (David) Barone of Struthers, Larry (Virginia) Gentile of Boardman, Lee Polis of Struthers, Anthony (Kathy) Gentile of Struthers; 16 grandchildren and 31 great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by 7 brothers, Pat, Nick, Chris, William, Fred, Sam, and Dominic Gentile; 5 sisters, Mary Quattro, Emma Genova, Ann Spano, Amelia Quatro, and Annie Gentile. Friends may call on Thursday from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. at the Clemente Funeral Home in Struthers.
