Joseph M. Spilly, 81 of Whiting passed away Saturday, July 14, 2018 at the Community Hospital, Munster, following a courageous five year battle with cancer. He was the beloved son of the late Joseph M., Sr. and Tillie (Bendis) Spilly; cherished brother of Richard (Nancy) Spilly and the Rev. William V. Spilly; proud uncle of Karen (Henry) Shahinian, Christopher (Jennifer) Spilly and Stacey Spilly; great nieces, nephews and many cousins.

Funeral services will be held on Friday, July 20, 2018, 9:30am at the Baran Funeral Home, 1235-119th St., Whiting; a Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at 10:00am at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church, Whiting with the Rev. William V. Spilly, officiating; interment to follow at St. John Cemetery, Hammond; visitation at the funeral home on Thursday from 4:00 to 7:00pm. Joe Spilly was born on September 18, 1936 and was a lifelong resident of the Whiting-Robertsdale Community.

He was a member of St. John the Baptist Catholic Church, Whiting, was a graduate of George Rogers Clark High School, Class of 1954 and was a United States Marine Corps Veteran attaining the rank of corporal. Joe was member of the Roosevelt Club and Ducks Unlimited. He was a licensed dog trainer and judge for canine competitions and enjoyed fishing and nature.

He was a retiree of the Amoco (BP) Whiting Refinery with a service of 15 years. Devoted to his family, Joe will be sadly missed by all who knew and loved him. In lieu of flowers and Masses, memorials to the Sierra Club, 2101 Webster St., Suite 1300, Oakland, CA 94612, would be appreciated.
