Julie Powell, 75, died Tuesday June 5, 2018 at her residence. Julie Ann Ayres, sister of Jim Ayres, was born March 5, 1943 in Culver City, California to Donald and Helen (Petersen) Ayres. She grew up on a farm in Chappell, Nebraska.

She graduated from Deuel County High School in 1960 and then attended Chadron State College where she received her teaching certificate. Julie taught 5th grade in Rapid City for two years at South Canyon Elementary School. On September 6, 1964 Julie married Robert Powell and they were blessed to spend 40+ years together.

They lived and worked at Badlands National Park in South Dakota and Colorado National Monument, before settling in at Theodore Roosevelt National Park in Medora, North Dakota. Julie often said the time spent in Medora with family and friends were the best years of her life. Julie and Bob raised two daughters in Medora and made many lifelong friends.

Julie was very proud of her time spend on the Billings County School Board, and the work she did in establishing the Billings County Courthouse Museum. Julie and Bob moved to Rapid City in 2004 where Julie raised the “light of her life”, grandson Peyton Powell. Julie loved spending time with family and sharing laughs with her friends.

She was an avid antique hunter and was quite proud of her “things”. Julie is survived by two daughters Robin (Gary Christensen) Powell and Jennifer Powell both of Rapid City; grandson Peyton Powell of Yankton, SD, grandson Calvin Gilb of Mitchell, SD, and brother Jim (LeAnn) Ayres of Ogallala, NE. She was preceded in death by her parents, her sister Arlene in 2018, and her husband Bob on December 31, 2004.

Memorial services were held June 18, 2018 at Osheim and Schmidt Funeral Home in Rapid City. Inurnment with graveside remembrance service will take place at the Ogallala Cemetery on July 7, 2018 at 10:00am. Rev Chuck Rager Of the Ogallala United Methodist Church officiating Osheim and Schmidt Funeral Home and Draucker Funeral Home of Ogallala, NE have been entrusted with arrangements.
