Gregg, 82, of Chamberlain, SD will be 10:00 am MONDAY, APRIL 1, 2019 at St. James Catholic Church in Chamberlain with burial in the Riverview Cemetery at Chamberlain. Visitation will be Sunday MARCH 31 from 5:00 to 7:00 pm at the Hickey Funeral Chapel in Chamberlain. Julie Dee Tyler Gregg was born in September 4, 1936 to George and Leonora Tyler.

She grew up on a farm near Canistota, SD. She was followed by siblings Mary, Doug, Diane and Kay. School activities including playing the clarinet blended well with fun on the farm.

She enrolled at SDSC in Brookings, playing in the college’s band. A diary note from her first year in school revealed an entry that stated “I FINALLY got a ride home with Bob Gregg”. Their romance filled much of her diary.

They were married in June of 1956 and moved to Kennebec SD to open Kennebec Drug. Children Allen, Mark and Susan became part of the drug store team. Julie excelled at cooking, preparing great meals for the family along with pies, cakes, cream puffs and even Baked Alaska.

For several decades she was an officer of the Lyman County Republican Party. After the deaths of the Dr.’s Horothys, Bob and Julie bought out Benson Drug in Chamberlain and renamed it Gregg Drug. Long hours in the store did not slow down her community involvement and she became an officer in the Brule County Republican Party, a Board member of the nursing home and tireless fund raiser for the American Cancer Society.

She and Bob rode horses throughout Lyman, Brule, and Mellette Counties as well as the Badlands and Black Hills. One horse trip took them across the Continental Divide in Colorado during a heavy snow storm. When asked what she enjoyed most about riding horses, her answer was “Being with Bob”.

She would never complain. During a White River Frontier Days trail ride she was bucked off. A few days later at the store Bob noticed she was having difficulty breathing and had an unhealthy color.

He asked her if she was OK, she said she was considering taking a Tylenol. He immediately took her to the ER where she was found to have multiple broken ribs and a pneumothorax, requiring the emergent placement of a chest tube. Once the drug store was closed, she devoted time to children, grandchildren and great grandchildren.

Her last 5 years were spent in the Sanford Care Center in Chamberlain, SD where she passed away on March 19, 2019 at the age of 82 years. Survivors include her children Allen and Kathy of Sioux Falls, SD, Mark and wife Kim of Sioux Falls, SD and Susan Doop and husband Marlin of Gillette, WY; her grandchildren Derrick Gregg, Dylen Gregg, Tiffany Menke, Randi Doop, Joey Doop, and Jesse Doop; and her great grandchildren Gabriela Gregg, Logan Gregg, Noah Gregg, and Georgia Menke. She is also survived by her sisters, Mary Carr, Diane Slater and Kay Blankenfeld, and brother Doug Tyler, Julie is preceded in death by her parents George and Leonora, her husband Bob, and daughter-in-law Kristi Gregg.
