Swanson, 90, of Pukwana, SD will be 11:00 am Tuesday, April 2, 2019 at the United Church of Christ in Chamberlain with burial in the Swedish Lutheran Cemetery at Ola, SD. Visitation will begin Monday at 5:00 pm with family present. A prayer service at 7:00 pm at the United Church of Christ in Chamberlain.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the United Church of Christ, Chamberlain, SD; St. Olaf Lutheran Church, Ola, SD or the Swedish Lutheran Cemetery, Ola, SD. Roy G. Swanson, 90 years, of Pukwana, South Dakota died on March 29, 2019 after battling cancer for almost three years. The youngest of three children, he was born on September 8, 1928 in Chamberlain, SD to Albert and Ella (Gerald) Swanson.

Roy attended Pukwana High School and studied agriculture at SDSU in Brookings, SD. Roy and Wanda Schjulstad were married in 1950 and began farming with his father Albert and uncle Chet on the Swanson family farm south of Red Lake. Roy was a dedicated farmer/rancher and loved his cattle and farm cats!

At an early age Roy received the Outstanding Young Farmer Award and in later years two Soil Conservation Awards. Roy and his wife Wanda have been active members of the United Church of Christ throughout their marriage. He was a director in the SD Stockgrowers Assocation and also served on the Red Lake Township Board.

Roy played basketball for Pukwana High School, was on the SDSU Rifle Team and played baseball many years. As their family grew he and Wanda loved attending many sports, musical and other events that their grandchildren and great grandchildren participated in. Throughout the years they rarely missed an event!

Roy also loved to hunt, trap shoot, fish and golf with his friends and family. For many years during the winter months Roy and Wanda enjoyed traveling to Texas and California to visit family and friends. Roy is survived by Wanda, his wife of 68 years, daughter Gail Gunderson (Dave) of Chamberlain, and three sons: Craig Swanson (Peggy) of rural Chamberlain, Kim Swanson (Donna) of Rapid City, and Barry Swanson (Debbie) of rural Chamberlain; seven grandchildren: Jenna (Travis) Vaad, Brianna (Brent) Burden, Wade (Leah) Gunderson; Trent (Lynn) Swanson, Jason (Taya) Swanson, Alisha (Buster) Vincent; Amber (Mike) Dodson; 16 great grandchildren; and many nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Roy was preceded in death by his parents, his sister Dorothy Glasser, brother Don Swanson and grandson Derek Swanson.
